The implants consist of small biocompatible titanium posts or rods that are drilled into the upper or lower jawbone. After a certain amount of healing time, the titanium rods are fitted with crowns. The crowns essentially then become the actual artificial tooth or teeth you will eat, speak, and smile with.
The process of getting implants typically requires a number of visits over several months:
First Consultation: We will take x-rays to prepare for the placement of your dental implants. You can discuss your needs and ultimate goals with Dr. Rivas-Plata. With the help from 3D Imaging, she will explain the procedure in detail.
Placement: The implant will be surgically placed into the bone and allowed to heal and integrate itself for up to six months. Depending on the type of implant, a second stage may be required in order to place the “post” that will hold the artificial tooth in place.
Restoration: Once the implant has integrated with the bone, which can take anywhere from three to four months, we will secure the permanent crowns to the implants, allowing you to smile and restore function to your mouth again.
At Prime Dental, we tell our patients that dental implants are more stable than alternative dentures because they are literally fused with the jaw bone. This incredible process is called osseointegration — and it means your implants will last for years to come, if taken care of properly.
Just like natural teeth, dental implants need to be cared for every single day. Use a toothbrush and floss as you normally would. Cleaning is particularly important after meals. Of course, regular 6-months checkups are also essential for the health of your implants.
If you have one or more missing teeth, you could be a candidate for dental implants. Contact us for an implant consultation. At your appointment, Dr. Rivas-Plata will examine your entire mouth and give you a clear idea if the procedure is suitable for you.
From diagnosis to restoration, the team at Prime Dental will go above and beyond to make the dental implant experience a comfortable one.
